Kappa are some of the most recognisable Yōkai in Japanese folklore. These water spirits can be identified by an indentation in their head called a Sara, which holds the water that is actually the source of their strength. They are possibly the most common Yōkai and are found in ponds, streams and lakes all across Japan.

Their curiosity about humanity has brought them into contact with us time and time again. Sometimes they are benevolent, helping rural communities to irrigate their crops and passing their knowledge of medicine to humans in need. Yet they can also be malicious and cruel, drowning countless humans and animals that intrude on their watery realm.
